Security Notice (based on information taken from Security Manager of the British High Commission)

Travel outside the Diplomatic Enclave is PERMITTED but it is advised that Dutch citizens limit their movements and monitor announcements that are published in the local press or announced in the local media.

11 January 2007.
The Awami League will have countrywide demonstration/rallies all over the country today 11 January 2007. Because of demonstration/rallies in different parts of Dhaka, it is likely that vehicle traffic will be significant. Be advised, some demonstrators are expected to pass through the diplomatic enclave including the Notun Bazar highway (near the US GSO) to join the demonstrations.

The Awami League will hold demonstrations in the following areas: Gulistan, Bangabandhu Avenue, Zero Point, Muktangan, Paltan Maidan, Engineers' Institute, Russell Square, Sobhanbag, Mirpur, Syedabad, Uttara, Jatrabari and Mohakhali The situation through out the day may change at short notice and by the hour and sporadic violence may be likely. Any changes in the situation during the day will be advised. Please avoid areas where planned demonstrations/blockades are located.
Please report immediately if any suspicious activities are observed. Information from local staff and drivers is always welcome.

The Grand Alliance have announced fresh agitation programmes in the lead up to the forth coming elections.

14 January an indefinite siege of the Bangabhaban (Presidential Palace)
14-15 January Country wide blockade
17-18 January Country wide blockade
21-22 January threatened HARTAL

For Dutch Staff: Change/cancel appointments for those specific dates unless within the Diplomatic Zone.
